People often inquire about my decision to stay in Boise after completing college, instead of venturing off to live out-of-state. In the early stages of my corporate career, the thought of escaping my hometown and embarking on a new adventure did cross my mind. I had the opportunity to travel extensively for work with companies like Ore-Ida Foods and Kinko’s and while those experiences were enriching, there was always a sense of relief and belonging when I returned to Boise. It was where my heart truly felt at home.
Over the years, I witnessed the transformation of Boise. The introduction of The Boise Towne Square Mall, the expansion of the two major hospitals, and the development of Boise Downtown into a vibrant and bustling area with an array of exceptional restaurants. The presence of mountains and water played a significant role in grounding me to this place. Just two hours north, the picturesque town of McCall awaited, offering breathtaking beauty. Within a 30-minute drive, I would find myself at Bogus Basin, perfect for skiing in the winter or hikes in the summer or enjoying water skiing at Spring Shores. Everything I cherished, from outdoor adventures to recreational pursuits, was conveniently located within a three-hour radius. Even after a long day at work, I could easily find solace by visiting the Boise River or hiking a trail in the Boise Foothills.
One of my favorite things to do is ascending Table Rock, embracing its awe-inspiring views in all four seasons. Whether it’s the break of dawn or at dusk the sight of Boise from this vantage point never fails to take my breath away. It reminds me of a profound quote from Rick Rubin’s book, The Creative Act: A Way of Being: – “Taking a wrong turn allows you to see landscapes you wouldn’t otherwise have seen.”
In a way, Boise, or the greater Idaho, has been my unexpected adventure, offering a diverse range of experiences and landscapes that I may not have encountered elsewhere. It has become my sanctuary, where my roots are firmly planted, and where I find inspiration and contentment. While the idea of moving away might have intrigued me in the past, I now realize that true fulfillment lies in embracing the beauty and opportunities that surround us right here – at home!
